Summer In The Forge 2024

Following a busy few weekends for Marlborough Open Studios, the forge is a little quieter. I am now catching up on some orders and planning new work for the next exhibition in Shed 7 this coming winter.

With over 300 people visiting the forge and gallery over the two weekends, it was, at times, very busy. If you visited and didn’t get the chance to talk to me about any of my work, feel free to give me a call and book another visit.

With a variety of work on display from my 30+ year career, there were new pieces like the ‘Ladylovelywings’ bronzes set on a bronze ‘nest’ as pictured to the left.

I also exhibited framed prints of the origial sketches for these sculptures and another series of sketches for sculptures called ‘Notions Of Love’.

New Work

One of the pieces on display was ‘work in progress’ on the first weekend and was completed for the last weekend. It is now available for sale and is suitable for interiors or garden spaces.

Featuring forged lines curving upwards in a fluid and flowing motion, it looks as though it is moving. Set on 3 forged tapered legs it connects with the ground delicately and securely.

The pieces are connected with spacers and rivets, my preferred making style and honesty to the traditions of my craft.

The scale of the work I make is informed by how easy they are to move. I like to re-position works in my house and garden so where possible with my sculptures, I make them easy to move by one or two people.

Birds & Wings

This year I made some new out door pieces. For those that know my work, I often work with themes around birds, wings, flight paths and journeys.

The Moustachio Birds were popular and bring a smile to people that see them. The new ‘Love Birds’, swifts and swallows were also popular and I am making these to commission. Please contact me if you are interested in commissioning these pieces for your garden.

Demonstration – candle holder project.

I was demonstrating how to make the new candle stick I have designed while visitors asked questions and looked through my portfolios. This is a new design and incorporates some simple textural forging. When describing these pieces to my sister Rebecca, I used the words ‘simple forgings’.

Describing the techniques involved, Rebecca kindly pointed out that there was more to them than I was giving credit for! The design incorporates set-downs and making a tenon, upsetting, spreading, tapering and forming.

While they look like random texture marks, they are more considered and placed to get the effect I am after when light falls on them. They are set in natural Carerra marble to compliment the burnished metal finish. I also have more designs and variations to develop.

I will have a selection of these ‘simple’ candlesticks ready to view soon. Watch this space or sign up to my mailing list to hear about the next open day or exhibition.
